Independant Walking To School For Year 6

As our Year 6 children prepare for their next big chapter, Denham Village School has been focusing on the essential independence and life skills they need to thrive. With this in mind, we are pleased to offer Year 6 pupils the opportunity to walk to school independently. We recognise that this is a significant milestone and a huge responsibility; therefore, the decision must ultimately rest with each individual family. Our primary goal is always to ensure our children remain happy and safe, and we look forward to supporting you in making the choice that feels right for your child.

Please note: For safety and safeguarding reasons, if your child attends an after-school club, they must be collected by an adult at the end of the session, as these clubs often finish when it is beginning to get dark or when staff presence on the gates is reduced.

Year 6 children who are walking to school must not walk a younger sibling to school.  All younger children must be dropped off and picked up by an adult.

Guidance from the NSPCC and Government

The NSPCC and UK government state there is no legal minimum age for a child to walk to school alone. Instead, they advise that the decision should be based on a child’s maturity, confidence, and the safety of the route. Children under 8 often struggle to judge the speed and distance of traffic, so older primary children are generally better equipped.

Parental Responsibilities & Requirements

Before granting permission, parents and carers must ensure the following criteria are met:

  • Route Assessment: It is the parent/carer’s responsibility to check the route to assess its safety. The crossing of fast roads and walking through secluded areas is strongly discouraged.
  • Safety Awareness: Parents must be certain that children have a firm understanding of road safety and stranger danger. You should also consider how weather conditions and earlier darkness during winter months may affect the journey.
  • Supervision on Arrival: There should be someone at home to meet the child upon their arrival.
  • Communication: If a child does not arrive home within the agreed timescale, parents must immediately notify the school so we can take appropriate action, which may include contacting the police.
  • Behaviour: Parents remain responsible for their child’s behaviour before and after school. Should a child's conduct be deemed unacceptable, they will be required to be accompanied or collected by an adult.

Safety Tips for the Journey

  • Practice: Walk the route together several times, pointing out "safe spots" like a trusted neighbour's house.
  • Distractions: Enforce a strict rule while crossing roads to ensure they are fully aware of their surroundings.
  • Emergency Readiness: Ensure your child has memorised your phone number and knows how to call 999 in a real emergency.

Parent & Child Safety Checklist

  • The Route: Have we walked the exact route together at least three times?
  • Safe Crossing: Does my child consistently use the Green Cross Code (Stop, Look, Listen) and use pedestrian crossings where available?
  • Hazards: Has my child identified "high-risk" areas like busy junctions or secluded alleys to avoid?
  • Stranger Safety: Does my child know to never talk to, or go with, any adult they don’t know?
  • Safe Spots: Does my child know at least two "safe places" (e.g., a friend's house, a shop, or the school) they can return to if they feel scared?
  • No Distractions: Does my child understand that he/she must stay focused while walking and crossing roads?
  • Home Arrival: Is there a plan for who will be at home to meet them, and does my child know exactly how to enter and lock the house?
  • Emergency Contacts: Does my child have my phone number memorised and know how to call 999?
  • Time Check: Do we both know what time they should arrive home, and do I know to call the school immediately if they are late?
  • Weather & Visibility: Does my child have a reflective strip on their bag or coat for darker winter afternoons?

How to Proceed
If you feel your child is ready to take on this responsibility, please contact the school office: admin@denhamvillage.bucks.sch.uk for the Independent Walking Permission Form.  Please complete and sign the form before returning to the school office.

By signing this form, you confirm that you have assessed the route, discussed the safety guidance with your child, and accept responsibility for their journey to and from school.

No child will be permitted to leave the school premises alone until this formal consent has been received and processed.
